ITC Cheltenham: background and attribution
Tony Stan reworked the older Cheltenham design for ITC in the mid-1970s. The publisher highlights his enlarged lowercase x-height, more open counters and revised proportions as central changes from the earlier design.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The ITC release should be distinguished from other Cheltenham editions and custom newspaper adaptations. Inspect lowercase scale relative to capitals before comparing point sizes. Handtooled versions introduce another treatment rather than simply increasing stroke weight.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a newspaper-style test, compare a title, a deck and a short paragraph. Include a long word and an italic title to expose fit differences. Faustina and Lora are independent editorial serif comparisons, not a claim to supply a publication’s exact fonts.
For independent comparisons, try Faustina and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
