Iowan Old Style: background and attribution
John Downer designed Iowan Old Style for Bitstream in 1990. The publisher describes a text face informed by earlier Jenson and Griffo revivals but adjusted with a larger lowercase height, tighter letterfit and reproportioned capitals. Natalia Vasilyeva designed its Cyrillic extension in 2016, released by ParaType in 2017.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The cited edition lists Roman, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Black and Black Italic. The historical Latin design and a later Cyrillic extension are distinct stages of development. Identify the actual distribution before assuming an older file contains the extension or shares every metric with another vendor's resource.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set a paragraph with italic emphasis and a capitalized heading. Compare apparent size and line fit with another reading serif rather than relying on equal point sizes alone. Include actual Cyrillic text when that extension matters, and inspect punctuation and numerals in the selected edition.
For independent comparisons, try Lora and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

Your questions, answered.
Who designed Iowan Old Style?
The source credits John Downer with the 1990 Bitstream design and Natalia Vasilyeva with the later Cyrillic extension.
Is it a direct reproduction of Jenson's type?
The publisher describes influences from earlier Jenson and Griffo revivals alongside changed lowercase height, letterfit and capital proportions.
Does every Iowan file include Cyrillic?
Do not assume that. The cited extension is a later development, so identify your actual edition and its character set.
