Identify the typographic effect rather than the CSS display mode
In this guide, inline describes a visible treatment inside letter strokes. It is different from an inline element in HTML or placing a font declaration in an HTML style attribute. Start with the specimen you want: an alphabet with an internal line, an outlined title or a layered display design. A precise visual brief will narrow the choice more effectively than treating all three as interchangeable effects.
Capline makes the relationship unusually clear
Jeremy Tankard’s own account of Capline asks where an inline becomes an outline. He explains that its all-capital styles keep the same proportions, spacing and kerning while varying the internal line. A thinner internal opening makes the letter appear heavier; a wider opening makes it appear lighter. This documents one designed system rather than a rule that every inline family shares identical metrics.
Published display families show more than one approach
Monotype’s description of Gill Sans Nova distinguishes six inline weights from shadowed outline designs and a Deco style. Those are separately named parts of that particular family. When comparing a source, keep the exact style name with the specimen. Do not confuse the decorative appearance of an outline font with the technical fact that many ordinary font files also store their glyphs as scalable outlines.
Judge the internal detail at the output size
For an original poster, compare a short title containing rounded, diagonal and straight letters. Check that the interior line remains open at the smallest intended reproduction and does not disappear against a busy background. Keep dates and instructions in a quieter supporting treatment. The Monoton profile offers an independently named decorative comparison; it is not Capline or Gill Sans Nova. Continue with display-font and poster-font guidance for the complete hierarchy.
Your questions, answered.
Does inline font mean CSS display: inline?
The term here describes interior-line lettering. CSS inline layout is a separate technical concept.
Will every inline style keep the same line length?
No. Tankard documents shared metrics for Capline’s particular system; inspect the actual family rather than extending that behavior to all decorative fonts.
