Imperial: background and attribution
Bitstream’s Imperial is credited to Edwin W. Shaar. Its family account identifies the design as an Intertype response to Linotype’s legibility group, linking it with practical text composition. This guide concerns that Imperial: FF Imperial by Donald Beekman is a separately named display family and should not be treated as another weight of the same design.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The Bitstream catalog lists Roman, Italic and Bold resources. Compare those three supplied styles rather than assuming an additional bold italic or variable edition. Inspect the original specimen for figures, punctuation and language coverage, particularly when replacing a font in an existing publication.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set a short news-style paragraph with a bold heading and an italic citation. Compare line breaks, column density and emphasis at the intended reading size. If substituting another text face, allow for changed spacing and pagination rather than expecting a matching font size to preserve the layout.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
