A custom design for Nature’s editorial redesign
Commercial Type credits Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz with Harding, working with Nature creative director Kelly Krause and consultant Mark Porter. The project began in late 2018 and appeared in print and digital publications in 2019. The family is named for neurologist Anita Harding.
Flared terminals connect serif and sans traditions
The foundry describes Harding Display through contrasting flared and rounded terminals. Compare those details in a full heading at its intended size. A small screenshot can hide the differences and make a custom design appear to be an ordinary sans serif. Keep the exact title and edition with the specimen.
Scientific text required more than attractive headlines
Harding Text has looser spacing and clearer distinctions among I, l and 1. Greek development involved Panos Haratzopoulos, and Nature’s titlepiece was separately adapted. For a technical article, compare symbols, prose and the masthead separately rather than assuming one style solves every role.
Plan an independent scientific layout around the content
For an original research handout, first collect the actual equations, names and symbols that must appear. Test those alongside body copy before deciding on a visual style. Keep captions near their figures and give subscripts enough room rather than compressing line spacing to force a page count. Harding’s documented design problem offers a useful lesson in matching typography to content; it does not establish a public download or permission to extract font files from Nature publications.
Your questions, answered.
Who designed Harding?
Commercial Type credits Paul Barnes and Christian Schwartz, working with Nature’s Kelly Krause and Mark Porter. The Greek character set involved Panos Haratzopoulos.
Is Nature’s logo identical to ordinary Harding text?
No. The foundry describes a separate titlepiece adaptation, so matching the family does not automatically reproduce the masthead artwork.
