01

Granjon: background and attribution

George William Jones directed Granjon's development at Linotype's English branch, where it appeared in 1928. The publisher traces its source to a 1592 Egenolff specimen, identifying Claude Garamond's roman characters and Robert Granjon's italic forms. The modern family therefore has a more specific history than its surname alone might suggest.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The roman and italic draw on separately attributed historical forms, coordinated within the later Linotype interpretation. Roman identifies the upright treatment rather than a separate typeface origin. Compare the actual selected resources, especially capitals, punctuation and italic emphasis.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a book paragraph with several italic words and a short heading. Judge reading texture, spacing and line endings at the intended size before comparing another old-style serif. Keep the selected digital edition identified when replacing older document fonts, since historical influence does not establish matching metrics.

For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
