This preview uses a real font. Copying ordinary text into another app will not carry this font with it. The PNG keeps the visual appearance.

01

Choose a font asset for the project, not one universal hardware font

For a new Game Boy homebrew project, identify the toolchain before choosing a download. Damien Guard’s ZX Origins supplies original 8×8 designs in several formats, including Gameboy and TrueType; those formats serve different workflows. A desktop specimen is useful for an early mockup, but it is not automatically the image asset expected by GB Studio. This guide concerns making your own game text, rather than identifying a particular commercial game’s title.

02

Keep the image and character mapping together in GB Studio

The official GB Studio settings documentation places fonts in assets/fonts as matching PNG and JSON files. Characters occupy cells no larger than 8×8 pixels, arranged sixteen across; the default mapping begins with space at code 32. Start from an existing project template and preserve the image–mapping pair. Test a space, a question mark, digits and each special character your dialogue actually uses before replacing all the game text.

03

Check narrow letters and the finished dialogue box

GB Studio documents magenta #ff00ff at the right edge of a character cell to mark unused width, allowing narrower glyphs. Change one narrow character first, then inspect a real dialogue line containing repeated letters and spaces. Santiago Crespo’s font tools separately support creating backgrounds from GBS fonts and generating mapping files; inspect their current requirements if that workflow is useful. Press Start 2P is an independent desktop comparison. Homepage Unicode text styles do not create GB Studio font assets or preserve their character mappings.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Can I copy styled text into GB Studio to install a font?

No. The documented workflow uses image and mapping files. Copied Unicode characters do not supply those glyph assets.

Is every Game Boy-style font the same alphabet?

No. Choose the actual resource for your game and test its characters and mappings. A platform name does not guarantee identical glyph coverage or appearance.
