Freight Collection: background and attribution

Joshua Darden’s Freight began with a serif design referencing eighteenth-century Dutch type. The wider collection developed into coordinated branches, including Text, Display and Sans, along with additional size and width roles.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Text, Display and Sans are not merely synonyms for the same outline. A serif reading face, a larger headline cut and a sans companion establish different layers of a system. Identify the branch before deciding on weight or italic settings.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Build a publication sample with a headline, body paragraph and caption. Compare the amount of detail each role needs instead of using the darkest display cut throughout. Lora and Source Sans 3 offer separate serif-and-sans comparisons here, not members of Freight.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
