Founders Grotesk: background and attribution

Kris Sowersby released Founders Grotesk through Klim in 2010. It brings together details from early twentieth-century Miller & Richard grotesques, Caslon’s Doric series and later headline spacing, rather than attempting a literal revival of one historical model.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Tight spacing gives the main family a display-oriented texture. Klim’s design account explains why a separate Text version was developed after small-size newspaper use exposed limitations. Inspect the relevant branch; simply enlarging the tracking of a display cut does not recreate the Text design.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

For an editorial cover, compare a compact headline with a narrow column of text on a separate test page. Use the intended print conditions when evaluating small apertures. Libre Franklin and Archivo provide independent grotesque comparisons; consider their regular and bold textures separately.

For independent comparisons, try Libre Franklin and Archivo. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
