Forza: background and attribution
Jonathan Hoefler designed Forza in 2006 for Wired, with contributions from Tobias Frere-Jones, Andy Clymer and Sara Soskolne. It developed as a sans-serif companion to Vitesse. The magazine’s varied editorial needs informed a family with more range than a single futuristic display treatment.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The foundry describes a soft-cornered barrel motif rather than a simple circle or square. Compare the lowercase and less-common symbols as well as capitals. ScreenSmart is a separate screen-oriented adaptation, so retain the exact resource identity when moving between print and web layouts.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set a technology headline, a short paragraph and a numeric specification row. Compare the weight choices at actual reading size and inspect symbols needed by the article. Use the drawn italic rather than applying a generic slant to an upright resource.
For independent comparisons, try Michroma and Manrope. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
