The creator describes a move from experiments to a design tool
In his 2021 interview published by FontStruct, Rob Meek traces the project to earlier typographic synthesizers and his interest in matrices and modular letters. He describes wanting a tool for making complete original matrix-based designs rather than only manipulating existing fonts. That first-person account explains the construction approach without reducing every FontStruct creation to the same visual style.
Choose a small coherent design system first
For an original modular alphabet, establish a grid and compare a few straight, rounded and diagonal letters before drawing everything. Use those samples in short words and examine their spacing. A modular rule should help the letters relate without making distinct characters indistinguishable. Keep a list of required uppercase, lowercase, numerals and punctuation so a visually complete specimen does not conceal missing practical characters.
Select the download format for the receiving workflow
FontStruct’s current technical FAQ lists OpenType, TrueType and WOFF2 downloads, plus specific color-font formats with availability conditions. Choose a resource appropriate to the intended desktop or web use rather than assuming every offered format works in every application. Keep the editable design and exported edition distinct; a useful preview is not a substitute for recording which version a finished document uses.
Check character coverage and retain the package documents
The installation FAQ explains that downloads include license and read-me files in a ZIP archive. It also notes that some designs contain only one case, which can even affect the display of their names in software menus. Extract the actual files and inspect the intended text before installation. The font-creation guide covers broader editing concepts, while the Windows installation and file-types guides address the next production steps.
Your questions, answered.
Does every FontStruct design contain a complete alphabet in both cases?
No. The service’s FAQ explicitly notes upper-only and lower-only designs. Inspect the individual font’s repertoire.
Is every FontStruct download automatically the same format?
The technical FAQ lists multiple formats and feature conditions. Select the output needed for the intended application.
