01

A font editor creates a reusable text resource

A lettering image, a styled Unicode string and a font file are different deliverables. Start by deciding whether the project needs one finished word or an alphabet capable of setting new text. For a reusable font, write down the required letters, numerals, punctuation and language support. An attractive drawing of one initial does not establish the spacing or character coverage of a working family.

02

FontForge documents the full construction sequence

FontForge’s tutorial covers creating and importing glyphs, consistent stems and heights, accented forms, features, metrics, kerning and font generation. Its introductory lesson distinguishes the font-wide view from the outline editor for an individual glyph. This makes the documentation a practical route for learning the mechanics. Keep your own design brief beside the technical steps rather than assuming that following an editor tutorial determines the desired letter style.

03

Spacing belongs to the design, not just the export

Glyphs’ spacing tutorial defines sidebearings as the spaces on each side of glyphs and recommends establishing ordinary spacing before kerning individual pairs. Its handbook separately documents export formats and metrics. Compare repeated letters and real words at the intended reading size while drawing. If the basic rhythm changes, revise spacing before compensating with many pair-specific adjustments that may need to be redone later.

04

Preserve an editable source and a clear production target

Keep the original editor project, a small text specimen and version notes separate from exported files. Choose the format required by the receiving application rather than renaming an extension. For an original first project, a limited but accurately documented repertoire is easier to maintain than an incomplete promise of universal language support. The file-types guide explains distribution formats, while the tracking guide addresses a different operation applied to already-set text.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Is a font generator that changes Unicode characters a font editor?

Character substitution does not draw a reusable font’s glyphs, spacing or features. Choose the tool for the actual deliverable.

Should I kern every pair before setting ordinary spacing?

Glyphs’ tutorial recommends getting ordinary sidebearings established before pair-specific kerning. Evaluate the rhythm of real words as the design develops.
