Font Awesome Alternatives: Material Symbols and Bootstrap

Compare Material Symbols and Bootstrap Icons by formats and controls, map icons individually, and preserve labels and semantics when changing libraries.

Choose an icon library by the symbols and delivery formats your project needs, rather than replacing one font name and expecting the same icons. Material Symbols and Bootstrap Icons provide documented alternatives with different controls and resources. Plan the migration icon by icon.

01

Compare the original libraries and delivery formats

Google’s Material Symbols guide documents font-based use, individual SVG or PNG resources, and variable axes for fill, weight, grade and optical size. Bootstrap Icons separately supports SVGs, SVG sprites and web fonts, with or without Bootstrap. Choose the format that fits the project before copying an installation example. The existence of a font delivery option does not mean the libraries share Font Awesome’s character mappings, icon names or class conventions.

02

Map the actual icons and states before changing the asset

List the icons currently used, their visible labels and the action or information each one represents. Find an appropriate symbol in the candidate library and record its exact name; include filled and unfilled states when the interface uses both. Compare a navigation item, a compact button and a status message together. Keep a text label for important actions rather than choosing a nearly matching picture only because it occupies the same space. The Font Awesome setup guide remains useful when the better decision is to retain the current library.

03

Preserve meaning when switching the rendering method

W3C’s font-icon technique distinguishes font icons from ordinary text and gives examples with accessible names or decorative icons excluded from assistive-technology reading. Carry that meaning through the migration instead of relying on an old code point to remain meaningful in a different font. Consult each original library’s current documentation and terms. The homepage generator for copyable symbols and text styles produces Unicode text; it does not load these icon libraries, convert their mappings or make an interface accessible automatically.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Can I replace the Font Awesome family name and keep its code points?

Do not assume the mapping is shared. Choose the actual replacement icon and its documented name or asset in the new library.

Do I need Bootstrap to use Bootstrap Icons?

The project’s own documentation says its icons can be used with or without Bootstrap, including SVG and web-font delivery options.
