01

Dolly: background and attribution

Underware developed Dolly as a book typeface with expressive details. Its first printed specimen appeared in September 2001, designed by Faydherbe/DeVringer. The specimen’s publication date documents an early presentation of the family rather than implying that every later Dolly package has identical resources.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The foundry describes Regular, Italic, Bold and Small Caps roles. Italic is narrower and lighter in colour than the roman, while Bold can serve emphasis or display. Its relatively modest contrast supports small text, with details becoming more visible at larger sizes.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a book paragraph with italic emphasis and a small-cap running heading. Judge each role at its intended size and adjust the heading’s spacing separately. Inspect the larger details when using the same family on a cover.

For independent comparisons, try Lora and Source Serif 4. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
