Segmented displays and the DSEG project
DSEG is Keshikan’s font project inspired by seven- and fourteen-segment displays. DSEG7 and DSEG14 offer different segment constructions, while DSEGWeather provides related weather symbols. The creator’s release history traces DSEG to 2014 and an earlier predecessor to 2007. These dates describe this project, rather than the invention of electronic displays.
Read the creator’s documentation for original specimens, downloads and character behavior.
Choose numerals and punctuation together
Test 00:00, 11:11, 08:59 and 23:59 in the same fixed area. A narrow-looking one should not unexpectedly move the entire time display. Inspect colons, decimal points, minus signs and any AM/PM label at the intended size.
DSEG documents matching widths for the colon and space, allowing a blinking colon to be replaced without shifting the layout. Its period has zero advance width, which supports calculator-like decimal placement. Those are project-specific behaviors: do not assume every digital font handles punctuation the same way.
Seven segments, more segments or a different direction
A segmented display and a pixel-grid design are different constructions. Start with the original DSEG character map when a segmented appearance is essential. A font’s character coverage can also limit the labels you can set beside the numbers.
For other resources, see the Digital-7 guide and the specific LCD family guide. The editable Orbitron and Roboto Mono comparisons offer independent geometric and monospaced directions; they do not reproduce DSEG’s segments.
Free sources and a usable clock layout
The creator documents DSEG version 0.40 onward under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; earlier releases used different terms. Obtain the files and included license from the original source.
Keep unit labels readable, allow for the widest expected value and reserve space for negative readings if your layout needs them. Use a complete number string when comparing styles. For broader choices, explore digital display fonts and number fonts. Copying ordinary digits transfers their text value, not the font’s segmented appearance.
Your questions, answered.
What font should I use for digital-clock numbers?
DSEG provides a documented starting point for seven- and fourteen-segment designs. Compare the exact digits, colon behavior and required symbols before selecting a resource.
Is a calculator font the same as a clock font?
They can share segmented styling, but calculators also need careful decimal-point, minus-sign and digit placement. Inspect these characters together instead of judging only one numeral.
Does a digital clock font create a working clock?
No. The font draws the displayed characters. A functioning clock needs separate logic or hardware to keep and update the time.
