Compare two documented approaches to cutout lettering
The FF Cutout publisher account credits Max Kisman with the 1990 display design and lists ligatures, case-sensitive forms and proportional lining figures. A different construction appears in Harald Geisler’s Ciseaux Matisse account: an exhibition and Matisse’s Jazz informed a hand-cut newspaper commission in 2007, later developed into four styles. He distinguishes cut-out shapes from their boxed paper backgrounds and notes that the linear variants avoid curved outlines. These are distinct families, not interchangeable product names.
Decide what happens to the inside of a letter
For a digital poster, an enclosed counter remains a hole in the letter shape. For a stencil cut from one sheet, that inner piece needs a bridge or it falls out. Mark the counters in the actual words before choosing a font or arranging a cutting file. If you need separate paper letters for a collage, plan how those small pieces will be placed and attached. Test the most complicated letter on scrap material rather than assuming a visual cutout effect is already production-ready.
Proof the edge treatment at the final size
Make one composition with clean letter shapes and another with a deliberate cut-paper treatment. Inspect corners, small interior spaces and the gaps between letters at output size. Keep essential dates or prices in a calmer text face so the decorative heading does not carry every reading task. Cabin Sketch and Archivo Black are independent comparisons here, not either original family. The homepage’s copyable decorative lettering changes Unicode characters; it cannot provide vector cutting paths, physical stencil bridges or the original fonts’ OpenType features.
Your questions, answered.
Is FF Cutout a physically cuttable stencil font?
Its publisher documents a display family and typographic features, not a guarantee that every counter remains attached in a physical stencil. Inspect and prepare the actual cutting shapes.
Are FF Cutout and Ciseaux Matisse the same font?
No. They have different designers and documented construction approaches. Consult each publisher specimen when selecting a particular family.
