01

Computer Modern: background and attribution

Donald E. Knuth’s Computer Modern is a reinterpretation of a nineteenth-century Monotype modern-style design. CTAN describes an integrated family spanning roman, sans, monospaced and mathematical resources for TeX. Its later influence includes European Computer Modern and Latin Modern.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The base distribution uses METAFONT source, with Type 1 versions available through other distributions. A source package, an outline font and a TeX support workflow are different resources. The package’s Knuth License should be read for the exact distribution.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Compare a prose paragraph and a mathematical expression in the target TeX workflow. Source Serif 4 and Lora are independent text-serif comparisons, not replacements for Computer Modern’s coordinated mathematics system. Keep text and mathematics requirements together when choosing a document setup.

For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
