Chronicle Display: background and attribution

Jonathan Hoefler designed Chronicle Display in 2002. Hoefler & Co. presents it as the headline counterpart to Chronicle Text, drawing on the Scotch-style serif tradition. The related branches serve different sizes and editorial roles.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare the regular, condensed and compressed choices in the publisher’s specimen. A display design’s finer detail can behave differently from its text companion when reduced. Specify the width and optical branch in a handoff instead of asking another designer to find any font called Chronicle.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a large magazine cover title above a calmer deck and body paragraph. Inspect thin strokes against the final background and at the smallest reproduction. Playfair Display and Noto Serif Display provide separate headline-serif comparisons; they are not Chronicle’s text companion.

For independent comparisons, try Playfair Display and Noto Serif Display. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
