The original design director names Gotham Medium
In Jack Herr’s firsthand account of the Sequence project, he identifies Gotham Medium as the starting point. He describes rounding the corners and lowering the H and E crossbars to align with the lower connection of the P. Herr credits Jean-François de Buren’s original sketch direction and describes his own refinement work alongside Karen West’s pepper designs.
That is more specific than simply calling the logo Gotham Bold. Read the Gotham family guide for the typeface itself; the logo’s adjustments are a separate design layer.
Coordinate a few changes across the whole word
When developing an original restaurant wordmark, start with the complete name and identify a small number of shared features. A corner treatment should remain coherent on straight-sided and curved letters; a crossbar change should not accidentally make one character look smaller than its neighbors. Compare the word at storefront scale and at the size of a receipt or menu heading before adding a badge around it.
Use Montserrat or Manrope as independent geometric-sans comparisons for your own name. They are not Chipotle’s customized logo letters or substitute official artwork.
Treat packaging copy and another script as new tasks
JD&Co.’s own Chipotle project account distinguishes ongoing packaging applications from a Korean logo commission. The agency describes adapting the identity to Korean writing structure while preserving brand recognition. This demonstrates why a Latin logo’s font name cannot specify every letter on a cup, bag or localized sign.
For your own bilingual menu, choose type with the actual script coverage and compare the relative visual weight of both writing systems. Keep the approved wordmark separate from editable descriptions and prices. For an unrelated copyable caption, the homepage stylish text options use Unicode substitutions; they cannot embed Gotham or recreate a custom Korean logotype.
Your questions, answered.
What font did the Chipotle logo designers start with?
Sequence design director Jack Herr identifies Gotham Medium and describes specific modifications. The final logo is therefore not simply unmodified text in that font.
Does the same font name explain Chipotle’s Korean logo?
No. JD&Co. describes a separate Korean localization project shaped around that writing system. Distinguish the localized artwork from the Latin logo and packaging text.
