Gotham: background and attribution
Hoefler & Co. credits Gotham to Jonathan Hoefler and Tobias Frere-Jones, designed in 2000 and first appearing in GQ in 2001. Its references include the capital lettering of New York signs, facades and commercial graphics rather than a single earlier metal typeface.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family extends that capital-led source into lowercase, italics and several width branches. Distinguish Book, Bold and Black weights from Narrow or Condensed widths. “Gotham” in a document’s font menu does not by itself identify every style used in the original layout.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a campaign title, compare a full sentence with an all-capital slogan and a date. Keep the spacing settings explicit in the artwork handoff. Montserrat and League Spartan provide independent geometric comparisons; neither is a Gotham file or a guaranteed drop-in replacement.
For independent comparisons, try Montserrat and League Spartan. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
