Calluna: background and attribution
Jos Buivenga developed Calluna after experimenting with slab serifs while working on Museo. The directional serif idea became a text family balancing sturdy paragraph texture with finer details for display. The foundry describes about a year and a half of work and credits Igino Marini’s iKern service for spacing and kerning.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family includes Light, Regular, Italic, Semibold, Semibold Italic, Bold, Bold Italic and Black. The creator identifies Regular as free; that statement should not be extended to every family style or to an open-source license. Calluna Sans is a separate companion.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a reading paragraph, an italic quotation and a large chapter heading. Keep line length fixed while evaluating paragraph colour. Use genuine italic and bold resources when needed instead of assuming the free Regular alone supplies every typographic role.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
