Bulmer: background and attribution
Monotype traces Bulmer to types William Martin cut around 1790 for printer William Bulmer, including work used in Boydell’s Shakespeare. Its own revival began as a private Nonesuch Press version in the early 1930s and reached general release in 1939. The digital edition draws on research into printed work and earlier metal versions.

Forms, styles and what to inspect
Monotype describes a narrower, taller appearance than Baskerville, retaining older serif qualities while moving toward modern-face contrast. The catalog separates regular, italic, heavier and display styles. Compare the display cuts at headline size rather than assuming they share the same small-text behavior.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set a chapter opening, a full paragraph and a short quotation. Compare the balance of the heading and body before choosing weight. Include dates, punctuation and italic book titles in the sample; a pleasing alphabet alone cannot show paragraph texture.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
