Identify the named family rather than the newspaper format
Three Islands Press identifies Broadsheet as Brian Willson’s digital interpretation of eighteenth-century newspaper type, naming publications from 1750 and 1776 as models. It lists Roman and true Italic resources. This is a named contemporary family, distinct from the broadsheet newspaper format. Credit the modern font and any historical source separately.
Historical characters and typographic features need deliberate use
The foundry documents long-s ligatures, true small capitals, oldstyle and lining figures, printer’s flourishes and Latin support. Keep the original wording and a modern transcription distinct when using those features. Inspect the actual edition and application controls before expecting a particular ligature or figure setting to appear automatically.
Build a short, attributed newspaper-text study
Choose a brief original announcement or an accurately sourced historical excerpt. Set a heading, date line and several paragraphs at the intended column width. Compare Roman with Italic for emphasis, then inspect the long-s treatment in whole words rather than isolated characters. Reserve printer’s ornament for a defined separation between items. If the project teaches historical reading, place the modern transcription beside the visual study so unusual forms can be understood without silently rewriting the source.
Keep modern comparisons separate from the original font
Old Standard TT and EB Garamond below are independent historical-text directions, not Broadsheet software or exact replacements. Compare the same passage to examine texture, spacing and line endings before choosing the actual family. Obtain Broadsheet through the foundry’s authorized source and retain the edition and feature settings with the editable document. A distressed scan overlay belongs to the image treatment; it should not be confused with the typeface’s own glyph design or the condition of an original newspaper.
