Bradford: background and attribution
This guide covers Lineto’s Bradford by Laurenz Brunner. Its technical documentation describes development across 2007–2018 and a contemporary response to Römische Antiqua, with a separate Mono companion. ActiveSphere publishes another family called Bradford by Ronnie Dela Cruz; that design has different resources and should not inherit Lineto’s history.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare the intended text weights and italics in the Lineto specimen. The Mono companion changes spacing behavior and is a separate resource, not an ordinary bold setting. Keep the publisher and edition in project notes so a short family-name reference cannot lead a collaborator to the unrelated ActiveSphere design.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a reading passage, a short editorial heading and a caption. Evaluate the paragraph at its intended size and compare the italic’s rhythm against the upright. For aligned codes or numbers, investigate the separate Mono resource rather than mechanically adding equal spaces to proportional text.
For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Lineto to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Bradford font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
