Bifur Font and Layered Lettering

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

Bifur treats the parts of a letter as a graphic composition. Its history includes A. M. Cassandre’s metal-type design and a later digital interpretation by P22/IHOF. Distinguish the original alphabet, the digital expansion and a contemporary layout made with either as a reference.

01

Cassandre’s original Bifur

P22’s published account dates Cassandre’s Bifur to 1929 and describes its original production as metal type. It was available in a single-font arrangement and a two-part system intended for two-color printing. The division of a character into complementary components is therefore central to the design, not merely an added shadow effect.

Read the P22 creator interview and Bifur account for the historical description and examples.

02

What the P22 interpretation adds

The same source explains that P22/IHOF extended the original capital alphabet with lowercase forms. Its six-font set offered two hatching treatments and complementary partial-character resources that could be layered for multicolor lettering.

These details belong to the documented digital interpretation. Do not describe its expanded lowercase alphabet as an unchanged part of Cassandre’s original metal type. When reopening an existing project, identify the exact digital resource instead of relying only on the Bifur name.

03

Work with the complete word and its layers

Start with a short title and inspect every letter at the intended size. Hatching may appear clear in a large specimen but merge into a different texture when reduced. Compare one-color and two-color compositions before deciding how much visual complexity the project needs.

When combining complementary resources, keep the wording, size, alignment and spacing consistent. A second layer should belong to the same edition and intended pairing. Check the word silhouette as a whole, then add supporting information in a quieter typeface.

The source here documents design history; this page does not provide Bifur font files or establish current availability of a particular edition. Use the original publisher when investigating resources and terms.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Who designed the original Bifur?

P22’s historical account credits A. M. Cassandre and dates the original metal type to 1929.

Did the original alphabet include the P22 lowercase?

The creator account describes the lowercase as an expansion in the later P22/IHOF interpretation of Cassandre’s capital alphabet.

Is layering Bifur the same as applying a shadow?

The documented system divides letters into complementary components for color and pattern. Use the intended paired resources rather than assuming a generic shadow command recreates the design.
