Beton: background and attribution
Heinrich Jost created Beton for the Bauer typefoundry. Linotype’s account places the family within the twentieth-century development of slab-serif display typography, whose industrial appearance differed from pen-derived text designs. The linked digital edition should be distinguished from the original printing type and from other publishers’ editions.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The Linotype catalog lists Light, Demi Bold, Bold and Extra Bold, plus Bold Condensed and Bold Compressed. Its account explains that the two narrow resources are better understood as related display treatments than as identical steps along the main weight progression.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a short headline in Bold Condensed with supporting text in Light or Demi Bold. Check the balance at the intended column width instead of artificially compressing a regular-width font. Try the same wording in an independently drawn slab serif to judge whether the condensed treatment is needed.
For independent comparisons, try Arvo and Rokkitt. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
