Berthold Block: background and attribution

Hermann Hoffmann designed Block, first released by H. Berthold in 1908 according to the publisher’s account. Reworkings followed through 1926, with additional weights and italics added in the late 1970s. The current W1G resource is a digital edition of a design with a longer printing history.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

The publisher highlights bold shapes and notably short descenders. The W1G catalog includes Regular, Bold and Heavy as well as narrower treatments and selected italics. Inspect the exact style list rather than assuming every width has every weight and italic combination.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a dense poster heading and a narrow column title. Compare a purpose-drawn condensed treatment with the standard width at the same visual size. Check lowercase descenders and closely packed lines, leaving the supporting paragraph in a less forceful companion.

For independent comparisons, try Anton and Roboto Condensed. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
