Arno: background and attribution
Robert Slimbach designed Arno for Adobe, drawing on Venetian and Aldine book-type traditions of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The name comes from the river associated with Florence and its Renaissance setting.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family’s source describes multiple optical-size ranges, swash italics and small capitals. Compare those as functional text features rather than decorative characters copied from another alphabet. The exact release and application determine how its OpenType choices are exposed.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a long-form editorial sample, set an ordinary paragraph, a small note and a short italic quotation. Use swashes sparingly where they help a title. Alegreya and EB Garamond offer independently designed book-serif comparisons with different texture and spacing.
For independent comparisons, try Alegreya and EB Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
