Keep an unknown source maker unknown

mpressInteractive’s MPI Antique account describes a bold face with high stroke contrast and unbracketed serifs, based on wood type of unknown origin. The missing provenance is useful information: do not supply a famous nineteenth-century foundry or designer merely because the lettering feels old. On a study sheet, separate the digital publisher, the physical model and the model’s unknown maker. Antique is this product’s name here, not proof that every similarly named digital font reproduces the same alphabet.

02

Inspect the serif join rather than adding artificial damage

Set PRINT ROOM at a large size in the original specimen. Compare the thick and thin parts, then examine where each serif meets its main stroke: the maker explicitly distinguishes the absence of bracketing. Make a second version with only a change in size and surrounding margin. Do not add scratches as a substitute for understanding the construction; distressed texture and serif structure are different design choices. Use a plain supporting line for opening hours or an address, leaving the display heading enough room to show its forms.

03

Treat the font as an adaptation, not a printed impression

The publisher explains that its digital library comes from collected wood type used in LetterMpress and its own letterpress studio, with adaptations for digital appearance, missing characters, modern glyphs and accents. That process does not make a screen specimen a facsimile of a particular historical print. For an exhibition caption, distinguish the digital revival from an actual photographed impression. The homepage’s copyable Unicode variants replace characters; they do not reproduce MPI Antique’s outlines, an inked printing surface or the original physical type blocks.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Who made the original wood type behind MPI Antique?

The publisher explicitly describes its origin as unknown. Credit the digital publisher without inventing the earlier maker.

Does an Antique font need a scratched texture?

Not necessarily. This resource is described by its high stroke contrast and unbracketed serifs. Texture is a separate question from those structural features.
