Adobe Caslon: background and attribution
Carol Twombly developed Adobe Caslon by studying William Caslon specimens printed between 1734 and 1770. The digital revival is one interpretation of that historical material; a Caslon name on a different release does not identify the same outlines.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The OpenType Pro edition brings formerly separate resources and additional features into a modern family. Inspect small capitals, ligatures and italic text within the actual application. Historical references and contemporary file features answer different questions.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a book sample, compare a chapter opening, a paragraph and a footnote. Check the size of punctuation and italic emphasis at the real reading scale. EB Garamond and Crimson Text provide independently designed book-serif comparisons, rather than an Adobe Caslon download.
For independent comparisons, try EB Garamond and Crimson Text. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Adobe Fonts to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Adobe Caslon font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
