ABBA Font: Rune Söderqvist’s Reversed-B Logo

Explore the sources, compare the examples and choose the right approach.

ABBA’s official biography of Rune Söderqvist explains the logo’s reversed B as a deliberate relationship among the group members’ initials. That particular arrangement is a wordmark decision, not the name of a complete ordinary alphabet.

01

Use the band’s own design history

ABBA’s official site records Söderqvist beginning work with the group in late 1975 on its Swedish Greatest Hits sleeve. It credits him with the familiar logo the following year. His concept turned each B toward an A, relating Björn and Benny to Agnetha and Anni-Frid. The mirrored arrangement therefore has a documented rationale rather than being an arbitrary effect supplied by a generic font generator.

02

The sleeve designer shaped a wider identity

The same biography describes Söderqvist’s subsequent album sleeves and visual work for the group’s major tours. That broader role helps explain why an album image contains more than a font choice. Keep the logo, album title, photography and supporting text identified separately when comparing a cover. The credit for the reversed-B mark does not establish that every line on every release belongs to one universal ABBA alphabet.

03

A reversed letter is part of the composition

Type your intended word normally before considering reflection or other transformations. A mirrored B changes letter orientation; it is not simply a bold or italic style. Use the image-identification guide for a particular ABBA sleeve, and the geometric-font guide for independent visual comparisons. Do not label a loosely similar sans serif as an exact official font solely because it can display A and B.

04

Build an original compact music wordmark

Try a short band or event name with one plain supporting line. Compare the title in one color, then evaluate whether any reflected letter would impair reading. Keep spacing balanced around unusual forms and check the result at a small social-image size. Record any custom drawing or transformation separately from the actual chosen font so the final specification accurately explains how the name was made.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Why is one B reversed in the ABBA logo?

The official biography explains Söderqvist’s idea of turning each B toward an A to represent the two couples.

Does that identify all typography on ABBA albums?

No. A logo, album title and supporting text should be examined separately.
