THE TYPE NOTEBOOK

Menu & Restaurant Font Choices

Compare real typefaces, then choose the details that fit your words.

A menu needs readers to find dishes, descriptions and prices easily. A café or restaurant mood can guide the heading, but it should not make ingredients or prices difficult to scan. This is a practical font comparison, not a universal food-lettering category. Use the editable specimens to compare your own text, then follow the family links for background, styles and official downloads.

01

What this style means

A menu needs readers to find dishes, descriptions and prices easily. A café or restaurant mood can guide the heading, but it should not make ingredients or prices difficult to scan. This is a practical font comparison, not a universal food-lettering category.

The collection is a starting point for comparing letterforms. It does not promise that a font used for one project, brand or period is identical to any of these families.

02

Compare the families and their references

Lora offers a text-serif direction, Libre Franklin a straightforward sans comparison, and Berkshire Swash a more expressive option for a limited heading. Their individual project accounts explain the designs; none is presented as a mandatory restaurant font.

Explore the full profiles for Lora, Libre Franklin, Berkshire Swash. Each includes its own project description and source license, so you can judge the actual design rather than the category name alone.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a long dish name, an ingredient description and several prices. Inspect numerals, currency signs and the actual languages on the menu. Reserve the most decorative treatment for a short section heading and use a calmer family for dense information.

Use the same wording and approximate size in each specimen. The size and tracking controls help you inspect the design; the PNG is a visual reference rather than a complete page layout.

04

Downloads, copying and next steps

Open a family’s official font page from its specimen when you want the font files. The selected source distributions include open licenses; review the license included with the specific files you obtain, especially if you plan to modify or redistribute them.

Copying ordinary letters does not carry these typefaces to a different app. Use a font-aware design tool or export an image when the appearance matters. For the character-substitution alternative, read Unicode text versus real fonts.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Should every line on a menu be decorative?

No. Separate the visual mood of the heading from the clarity of descriptions and prices. Compare complete entries at the final menu size.

Are these live previews free to use?

Yes. You can edit and compare the specimens here without payment. Use each official source link to download the font and read the included license.

Why do copied words look different in another app?

The previews use actual fonts loaded on this page. Ordinary clipboard text carries the characters, not a requirement for another app to render the same font.
