THE TYPE NOTEBOOK

Hand-Drawn Fonts

Compare real typefaces, then choose the details that fit your words.

Hand-drawn type preserves a designed impression of marks made by hand, while turning those forms into repeatable font glyphs. It can suggest ink, marker or paint without producing a new hand-written drawing each time you type. Use the editable specimens to compare your own text, then follow the family links for background, styles and official downloads.

01

What this style means

Hand-drawn type preserves a designed impression of marks made by hand, while turning those forms into repeatable font glyphs. It can suggest ink, marker or paint without producing a new hand-written drawing each time you type.

The collection is a starting point for comparing letterforms. It does not promise that a font used for one project, brand or period is identical to any of these families.

02

Compare the families and their references

Finger Paint grew from an experiment with brush effects. Patrick Hand and Rock Salt offer different informal writing textures. Compare repeated letters in complete words: a handmade appearance does not establish that every occurrence has a distinct alternate shape.

Explore the full profiles for Patrick Hand, Rock Salt, Finger Paint. Each includes its own project description and source license, so you can judge the actual design rather than the category name alone.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a complete note and a short sign rather than only a name. Inspect repeated letters, punctuation and the stroke texture after reducing the output. Keep an ordinary text companion available when the informal marks interfere with dense reading.

Use the same wording and approximate size in each specimen. The size and tracking controls help you inspect the design; the PNG is a visual reference rather than a complete page layout.

04

Downloads, copying and next steps

Open a family’s official font page from its specimen when you want the font files. The selected source distributions include open licenses; review the license included with the specific files you obtain, especially if you plan to modify or redistribute them.

Copying ordinary letters does not carry these typefaces to a different app. Use a font-aware design tool or export an image when the appearance matters. For the character-substitution alternative, read Unicode text versus real fonts.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Will every repeated letter look different?

Not necessarily. A font repeats its glyphs unless its resources and the application’s shaping features provide suitable alternates.

Are these live previews free to use?

Yes. You can edit and compare the specimens here without payment. Use each official source link to download the font and read the included license.

Why do copied words look different in another app?

The previews use actual fonts loaded on this page. Ordinary clipboard text carries the characters, not a requirement for another app to render the same font.
