Yu Mincho: background and attribution

JIYUKOBO designed Yu Mincho, which Microsoft documents among Japanese font resources supplied through supported Windows and Office configurations. The listed family includes Light, Regular and Demibold. Distinguish those documented resources from the availability of a similarly named font on another platform or in a different application.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Microsoft lists Japanese script coverage alongside Latin, Greek and Cyrillic resources. Compare the exact font file, weight and character forms in the intended document. A family’s availability through a product does not by itself provide permission to redistribute its font files or embed them in a different service.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Set a Japanese reading passage with a heading and a short quotation. Compare Regular and Demibold at their actual output sizes, inspecting fine details and punctuation in context. The editable Source Serif 4 and Lora examples here are Latin comparisons only; use the original resource to evaluate Yu Mincho’s Japanese glyphs.

For independent comparisons, try Source Serif 4 and Lora. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
