Wisdom Script: background and attribution

James T. Edmondson originally designed Wisdom Script for Woods of Wisdom, a fifty-part poster series about bad advice. Lost Type’s account connects the family with that specific lettering project. Its origin offers useful context for comparing short poster headings rather than treating it as an anonymous decorative script.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Use the original specimen to compare the script’s capitals, lowercase and complete word shapes. Check the exact resource and character coverage needed for a project. Lost Type distinguishes personal-use and commercial-use resources, so a pay-what-you-want option should not be described as blanket permission for every use.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short advice-poster heading with a quieter attribution line. Compare the lettering at its intended output size, inspecting repeated letters and any crowded connections. Leave sufficient space around the script and keep longer explanations in a plain reading face so the main phrase remains prominent.

For independent comparisons, try Lobster and Oleo Script. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
