Whitney: background and attribution

Tobias Frere-Jones designed Whitney in 1996 for the Whitney Museum of American Art, with redevelopment in collaboration with Jonathan Hoefler beginning in 2000. The brief brought together museum publications and signage, which demand compact text and clarity at different viewing distances.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

This Whitney is a humanist sans-serif family, distinct from unrelated script fonts with the same name. Its open forms and compact proportions deserve comparison in both text and labels. Identify the publisher and the selected Book, Bold or Narrow style before matching an existing file.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try an exhibition title, a directional label and a paragraph of visitor information. Compare the smallest label independently from the headline. Source Sans 3 and Open Sans offer separate humanist-oriented comparisons; they have different spacing and should be reflowed when substituted.

For independent comparisons, try Source Sans 3 and Open Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
