01

Whisper: background and attribution

Google Fonts credits Whisper to Robert Leuschke. Its project description places the original design in the early 1990s, while the Google Fonts metadata records addition to that library in 2022. These dates describe different stages of the typeface’s history.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Whisper combines a pronounced slant with angular strokes and flowing calligraphic movement. The source description distinguishes its capitals from conventional Roman forms. The listed font resource is Regular at weight 400; the design’s slanted appearance should not be mistaken for a separately listed italic file.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a short invitation heading containing both capitals and lowercase. Leave sufficient space around rising and falling strokes, then check the result at its final size. For longer supporting text, use a quieter companion face and reserve Whisper for the part that needs expressive emphasis.

For independent comparisons, try Allison and Great Vibes. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

Who designed Whisper?

Google Fonts attributes Whisper to Robert Leuschke. Its project description says the design originated in the early 1990s.

Is Whisper a free font?

Google Fonts lists Whisper under the SIL Open Font License. Follow the official source for its files and included license; the editable comparisons here are different families.

Can a Whisper font generator change ordinary copied text into the font?

A font changes how text is drawn when its font software is available. Copying plain characters does not transfer Whisper’s letter shapes. Use the font in a compatible design application for the intended appearance.
