01

A documented change in Volkswagen’s type system

HvD Fonts dates Volkswagen’s VW Type project to 2015 and credits Hannes von Döhren and Livius Dietzel with MetaDesign. It describes an earlier customized Futura used from 1997, followed by a broader brief for digital interfaces, manuals and cockpit information. Keep that project history separate from the circular VW monogram.

02

VW Head and VW Text solve different reading tasks

The creator distinguishes VW Head for larger headings from VW Text for smaller reading. Its account describes square construction, open shapes, softer curves, screen optimization and special speedometer numerals developed with interior designers. Compare the headline and text styles in their intended roles rather than treating them as interchangeable files.

03

Build an independent vehicle-information comparison

For an independent vehicle guide, prepare a model heading, a paragraph, a specification table and a short navigation label. Compare the headline and reading roles separately rather than forcing one dramatic style onto every element. A specification number needs its unit and label close enough to be understood. Use actual long feature names and realistic values so that an attractive headline does not hide a cramped information layout.

04

Evaluate separate specimens without claiming they are VW Type

Manrope, Inter and Source Sans 3 are independent comparison specimens, not the Volkswagen custom assets. Compare their numerals, short labels and paragraphs at intended sizes. Keep critical information away from decorative backgrounds and avoid relying only on a thin weight to distinguish secondary text. A car-interior display introduces its own production requirements; a browser specimen can help explore typography but does not certify a font for an instrument panel.

GOOD QUESTIONS

Your questions, answered.

What are Volkswagen’s headline and text fonts called in the project?

HvD’s account names VW Head for large headline use and VW Text for smaller, longer reading. The project is credited to Hannes von Döhren and Livius Dietzel with MetaDesign.

Is the earlier Volkswagen Futura treatment the same family?

No. The creator’s history describes a customized Futura used from 1997 and a later VW Type project dated 2015. Keep the era of the reference clear.
