VL Gothic: background and attribution
VL Gothic is a Japanese TrueType font project associated with Daisuke Suzuki and Project Vine. The official project explains that it combines M+ material with newly drawn characters and material derived from Sazanami Gothic. Its history is therefore a documented composite development rather than an unexplained single-author alphabet. In September 2023 the project announced a move of releases to GitHub after its previous hosting became effectively unavailable, making the official page a useful starting point for current source locations.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family includes fixed-width VL Gothic based on M+1M Regular and proportional VL PGothic based on M+1C Regular. Its project account discusses Japanese glyph additions, Latin symbols, adjusted heights and JIS2004 variant support through IVS and OpenType controls. The source also distinguishes the component licenses. The editable comparison fonts on this page serve Latin text only: they do not reproduce VL Gothic’s kanji, kana or Japanese character repertoire, and should not be presented as full substitutes.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
For a bilingual coding tutorial, prepare a short Japanese explanation beside a code example containing Latin identifiers, punctuation and numbers. Compare the original fixed-width and proportional members in the application that will produce the document. Check alignment in the code independently from the rhythm of the Japanese paragraph. Use the Latin comparisons only for the English or identifier portion, and confirm the required Japanese characters and variants in the actual source edition before choosing a final layout.
For independent comparisons, try Source Code Pro and Source Sans 3. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
