Verlag: background and attribution
Jonathan Hoefler designed Verlag in 1995 for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The publisher relates its starting point to the building’s facade lettering and the broader geometric sans-serif tradition. The family developed to serve varied museum communications, rather than remaining a reproduction of one architectural sign.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The collection distinguishes three widths with weights and companion italics. Its tall ascenders and compact lowercase can make identical point sizes feel different from another font. Compare apparent size and line spacing in the intended layout instead of relying only on a numeric size value.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Prepare an exhibition heading, a wall-label paragraph and a narrow caption. Select the drawn width before adjusting tracking. Compare lining and tabular numerals where the layout needs dates, inventories or aligned information.
For independent comparisons, try Josefin Sans and Montserrat. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
