Variex: background and attribution
Rudy VanderLans and Zuzana Licko designed Variex in 1988. Emigre connects the project to early digital memory constraints: constructing letters around strokes reduced the outline data needed. That technical starting point shaped an intentionally unconventional alphabet.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The family offers Light, Regular and Bold. Stroke expansion changes apparent alignment rather than preserving a uniform x-height across every character and weight. The alphabet also combines uppercase and lowercase ideas. These are distinctive design decisions, not rendering errors to correct automatically.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a short exhibition title in each weight and compare the changing rhythm along its top edge. Give the title enough space to make its irregular character relationships visible. Use a separate reading face for longer captions and inspect the complete word rather than judging isolated glyphs.
For independent comparisons, try Righteous and Josefin Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
