Preserve the intended wording
Start with correctly written Urdu from a reliable source. A decorative font does not translate a name or establish a phrase’s meaning. Keep an editable copy of the text as the reference while exploring its visual treatment. A resource’s Arabic-script label alone does not establish that it supplies every letter or combination required by an Urdu passage.
Use an identified Nastaliq project
Noto’s official description identifies Noto Nastaliq Urdu as a Nastaliq design for Arabic-script text, especially Urdu. The project’s release notes document substantial engineering changes, including revised dot positioning and bari ye handling in version 4.000. This makes the actual edition relevant: a screenshot from one version need not show the behavior of every later build.
Consider complete lines and mixed content
Use an application with appropriate right-to-left text support. Compare the full heading and several lines, including numbers and any Latin name in the design. Leave enough vertical space for the actual letter arrangements instead of judging only one isolated word. If something appears disconnected or misplaced, preserve the source text and review the resource and application rather than reversing characters manually.
Keep the chosen resource reproducible
Follow the official project releases for edition information and supplied documentation. Record the family, version and styles in the project notes. This page points to the original resource; it does not present a Latin comparison face as an Urdu substitute. The Unicode guide explains why character data and the chosen font are different layers.
Your questions, answered.
Does any Arabic-script font guarantee suitable Urdu text?
No. Check the exact resource and the passage’s required letters and behavior.
Why does the font edition matter?
The original project documents changes to shaping and mark positioning across releases.
