Urbane: background and attribution
Rian Hughes designed Urbane for Device, exploring the territory of early geometric modernist sans-serif families. The publisher names Futura, Erbar, Spartan and Elegant Sans as reference points. The result uses optical balancing rather than relying on identical mathematical widths for every letter.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
A single-storey a, tall x-height and slightly condensed bowls are among the described features. The current package spans upright, italic and condensed resources, while the older descriptive account covers a smaller original range. Check the chosen branch and supplied files when comparing style totals.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Compare a heading, a mixed-case introduction and a price table. Inspect figure alignment using the actual numeral settings. Select the standard or condensed branch before adjusting tracking to fit a narrow space.
For independent comparisons, try Manrope and Josefin Sans. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
