Two first-party accounts describe different identity stages
Pentagram’s own project account describes work beginning in 1996, with Bodoni and Helvetica selected for its graphic program. It also documents a customized T in the related Ted wordmark. A separate August 2010 airline announcement, preserved by United’s investor-relations site, explains the combined airline’s move to uppercase sans-serif lettering with Continental’s globe and colors, dropping “Airlines” from the logo. The announcement does not identify a retail font family. Neither source establishes one typeface for every current sign, application or interface.
Identify the era before searching for the letterforms
Start with the complete reference, including surrounding wording and its source date. Record whether it is an aircraft name, a logo lockup, a boarding document or ordinary paragraph text. Compare the capital shapes within the same item before mixing references from different liveries or campaigns. For a historical study, label each example with its date and application. That small catalog is more useful than trying to match an isolated letter while silently moving between different identity systems.
Build an independent travel layout without replacing the mark
For an original itinerary or travel poster, put the destination first, departure details second and explanatory copy last. Compare a neutral sans treatment with a serif-led editorial treatment using Inter and Old Standard TT. These are independent specimens, not airline fonts or replacements for approved logo artwork. Our homepage Unicode text tools can explore copyable captions; they do not supply airline wordmarks, historical font files or official identity assets.
The Emirates typography guide also distinguishes airline artwork from a separately commissioned nation-brand typeface. Keep the commissioning organization with each reference.
Your questions, answered.
Which retail font does the 2010 United announcement name?
It describes uppercase sans-serif lettering but does not name a retail family. An exact commercial font attribution would require additional direct evidence.
Does the historical identity account establish the current app font?
No. The documented project and the 2010 announcement have specific scopes; present-day interface identification requires evidence for that application.
