Uniform: background and attribution
Richard Miller designed Uniform for Miller Type Foundry. The publisher describes a geometric family developed around a circle-based construction, beginning with the Black weight. The family adapts that starting idea across widths instead of merely compressing a single drawing.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
The Regular-width O begins with a circular model. Condensed and Extra Condensed use taller straight-sided constructions. The catalog lists three width groups, each with six weights, as well as features including old-style figures, tabular lining figures, alternates and ligatures.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Set a wide heading and a narrow label using the matching width groups. Compare counters and rhythm at the same visual size, rather than squeezing the Regular with a horizontal scaling control. For a table, inspect tabular figures and decimal alignment in the actual application.
For independent comparisons, try Montserrat and Antonio. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Miller Type Foundry to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Uniform font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
Your questions, answered.
