01

Karbon is central to UCLA print materials

UCLA’s official typography resource identifies Karbon for print and text embedded in images. It describes seven weights, running from hairline through bold, and makes Karbon required for major marketing materials. This is a communications-font identification. It does not establish that an athletic jersey, a historic campus sign or the university’s signature artwork was simply typed using an ordinary retail Karbon style.

02

Three commissioned styles have limited character sets

UCLA commissioned Thin Reveal, Bold Outline and Bold Open Outline versions. Thin Reveal has lowercase and numerals; the two outline versions have capitals and numerals. The guide advises sparse use and states that Thin Reveal should never be used online because of accessibility concerns. A decorative alphabet is therefore unsuitable as a universal replacement for all headings, especially where a name or acronym needs missing character forms.

03

Digital text and web licensing are separate decisions

UCLA names Helvetica, Arial and Roboto for digital applications. Its guide distinguishes using Karbon inside graphics from deploying the Karbon webfont, which involves a departmental purchase and ongoing implementation responsibility. A print font installed on a designer’s computer is not evidence of a website license. For a reconstruction or font-identification question, record whether the sample is live text or an image before choosing the appropriate comparison.

04

Test the typography at the finished size

For an independent campus-style event page, keep the title concise and let the essential date and location remain ordinary readable text. An outline treatment may look persuasive in a large specimen but lose definition as a thumbnail. Compare the smallest intended preview, then enlarge the details that need immediate recognition. Do not use extra letter spacing as a substitute for sufficient character size or a suitable text weight.
