Tungsten: background and attribution
Tobias Frere-Jones with Jonathan Hoefler designed Tungsten in 2003. The publisher connects its compact modular sans forms with sign painters’ gaspipe lettering. It appeared on Bravo in 2004 and was expanded into a larger width-and-weight system in 2012.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Inspect flat sides and curved transitions in letters such as S and O. The design offers separately drawn widths, including narrow and compressed branches. Choose a branch before fitting a long headline; horizontal distortion of a regular outline produces a different result.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Test a sports-style title with a player name and a number. Make the title prominent without asking the same dense setting to carry a full paragraph. Teko and Big Shoulders provide independent compact sans specimens for comparing the role.
For independent comparisons, try Teko and Big Shoulders. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
