TT Ricks: background and attribution

TypeType identifies De Vinne, designed by Gustav F. Schroeder in 1892, as a starting reference for TT Ricks. The foundry deliberately developed a new character rather than limiting the project to a faithful revival. Its later update expanded the character set, language support and typographic features.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

TT Ricks combines narrow forms, strong contrast, dense spacing and pointed, thorn-like serifs. The current range has three upright styles and a variable font. The publisher shows alternative leg treatments, oldstyle and circled figures, and additional character options. Compare the actual weight and stylistic set before identifying a sample.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a book-cover title with a surname, subtitle and a small publisher line. Give the display lettering room to show its pointed details; do not reduce every element to the same size. Compare several weights using identical wording, and review how the darkest style changes the balance between the title and surrounding space.

For independent comparisons, try Pirata One and Cormorant Garamond. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
