Trajan: background and attribution
Carol Twombly designed Trajan for Adobe in 1989, basing its capital forms on the inscription at the base of Trajan’s Column in Rome. The stone inscription is the historical reference; the digital font is a later interpretation.
Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.
Forms, styles and what to inspect
Compare the monumental capital proportions and the treatment of curves, diagonals and finishing strokes. A Roman inscription reference does not supply an ordinary lowercase reading alphabet by itself. Identify the actual release and its supported styles rather than assuming all Trajan-named files are the same.
Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.
Try it in a real layout
Try a short formal title, a date and a Roman numeral. Keep explanatory paragraphs in an appropriate text companion. Cinzel and Marcellus provide independent inscription-oriented comparisons; they do not reproduce a film title or distribute Trajan.
For independent comparisons, try Cinzel and Marcellus. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
Official preview and font resources
Use Adobe Fonts to try the original and investigate the files, styles and terms for your intended workflow. This site does not distribute or serve Trajan font software.
The editable alternatives here have their own source profiles and included licenses. For the difference between a font file and copied characters, read Unicode text versus fonts.
