01

Trade Gothic: background and attribution

Jackson Burke began the first Trade Gothic cuts in 1948 and continued adding weights and styles through 1960 at Mergenthaler-Linotype. The publisher notes that the family has a less uniformly coordinated structure than some other popular sans-serif families.

Read the publisher’s family page for the source account and the edition currently offered. Keep a family name distinct from its particular release, width or optical branch.

02

Forms, styles and what to inspect

Compare individual widths and weights rather than assuming one style predicts every other branch. Condensed resources have their own display role; a normal-width file compressed in software is not automatically an equivalent.

Use the original publisher specimen to inspect those features. An alternative can share a broad role without having the same letter shapes, metrics or character coverage.

03

Try it in a real layout

Try a newspaper-style title above a serif paragraph. Oswald and Roboto Condensed provide independent narrow sans comparisons. Inspect the longest headline and its actual line breaks before choosing a replacement.

For independent comparisons, try Oswald and Roboto Condensed. Use the same wording and approximate output size. The related style guide provides broader design context.
